Do We Need Another Version of Hotel California?

by Mark Cartwright

Styx, Foreigner, and Don Felder have recorded a new version of the Eagles anthem “Hotel California” It will be included in a compilation album that will be released this summer.  Felder, who penned the song originally as an Eagles member, will be joining the other two acts as they tour together this summer.  Part of me wonders if we really need another version of Hotel California.  The song is woven so deeply into our world that almost every person with half a sense of pitch can hum the entire guitar solo.  So if they are going to re-record the song note for note, my vote is "No."  But, if they are going to change it up, then it could add new life to the song, such as the live version on Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" did.  With the vocal power that Styx and Foreigner bring to the table, it has the potential to be even better than the original.
