A duffer visits with Dufner

by Mark Daniels

It was unlikely setting to visit with one of the most unlikely stars on the professional golf circuit. At the Discovery World museum on the Milwaukee lakeshore, I had a chance to meet 2013 PGA Champion Jason Dufner. He was in town to help launch ticket pre-registration for the 2015 PGA Championship coming back to Whistling Straits for the third time. The Auburn University graduate has immense talent but is one of the most stoic, unemotional players on tour. That's not to say he doesn't have a big sense of humor. His "Dufnering" pose went viral last year and he talked about his slouched, sitting pose at a grade school visit, saying he was rather bored and simply wanted to sit on the floor. He had no idea it would become a Youtube and instragram smash, copied by fellow tour players and fans alike. There's no denying his game however. At Oak Hill last summer, Dufner put up record breaking scores, including a second round 63 on his way to his first major victory. After the press conference, I spent a couple of minutes with Jason to discuss his on course demeanor, his rise to the top and his anticipated return to the Straits in August of next year.

As for the 2015 PGA, Championship Director Jason Mengel announced Tuesday that pre-registration is now underway. Fans can simply log on to pgachampionship.com to fill out information and join the priority waiting list for when tickets go on sale to the general public on August 11. The earlier fans register, the better positioned they'll be to purchase the most popular ticket packages. Practice round, single day, week-long passes will all be included. Mengel says a couple of very unique offerings are available. Whistling Straits, located in the town of Haven, just north of Sheboygan, has already hosted PGA Championships in 2004 and 2010 and after next summer's event, the 2020 Ryder Cup looms. Mengel says fans will have the chance to purchase "Ultimate Foursome" packages for not only the PGA but the Ryder Cup events as well.
