It's a little bit funny that they haven't received it already, but this June, Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin will be presented with the Songwriters Hall of Fame's highest honor: The Johnny Mercer Award.

The Johnny Mercer Award is given to a songwriter or songwriting team already in the hall of fame, but whose body of work is of such high quality and impact that it upholds the legacy of Mercer,  the guy who wrote "Moon River," "Hooray for Hollywood," "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby," "Summer Wind," "Satin Doll" and many others.

In a statement, Songwriters Hall of Fame Chairman Jimmy Webb said of John and Taupin's amazing track record, "It's just not that easy to write 40 Top-10 records.  It's kind of like swimming the English Channel with your hands tied behind your back."

He added, "Elton's readily identifiable melodic piano style has proven to be a perfect accompaniment to Bernie's razor sharp lyrics about relationships and living on the edge of life both in good and bad times."

John and Taupin, who've created more than 30 albums together, will receive their honor at the 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame induction gala, which will take place June 13 in New York City.  As previously reported, this year's inductees include Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith , Mick Jones & Lou Gramm of Foreigner and Eagles collaborator JD Souther , among others.
