SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Police identify the victims in yesterday's apartment fire on South Williams Avenue as 29-year-old Sulmi Siomara Guerra-Sandoval and 2-year-old Eli Galicia.
Fire/Rescue Chief Jim Sideras says three children are hospitalized. A 2-year-old girl is stable, a 4-year-old boy is critical and a 4-year-old girl has been transfered to Minneapolis.
Sideras says Guerra-Sandoval is the mother of the girls and she was babysitting Eli and his brother.
Officer Sam Clemens says Guerra-Sandoval lowered the three surviving children to two, male passerbys who saw the smoke and heard screaming. He says one of the men had hold of Guerra-Sandoval's arm and they were trying to get her out of the window. She pulled away from them to go back inside and get Eli.
Clemens identifies the men only as a 54-year-old and a 42-year-old from Sioux Falls.
Chief sideras says investigators determined that the fire started in the basement of the apartment but because of the heatr and smoke damage the cause may never be known.
