BURNSVILLE, MN (KWSN)- The University of Sioux Falls volleyball team was voted to finish 12th in the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Volleyball Preseason Coaches’ poll, announced Thursdaymorning. The Cougars finished 5-15 in NSIC competition in 2012 (14-16 overall) and placed 13th in the league standings.

Concordia-St. Paul was picked to win the league for the 10th-straight season coming off its sixth consecutive national championship. The Golden Bears received 15 first-place votes while Minnesota Duluth was picked second and received the other first place vote. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

Southwest Minnesota State and Wayne State were voted third and fourth, respectively, while Augustana was selected fifth. Minnesota State, Mankato and Winona State tied for sixth and Northern State finished eighth in the poll. The NSU Wolves were followed by MSU-Moorhead, Upper Iowa, Minnesota Crookston and Sioux Falls. St. Cloud State, Bemidji State, Minot State and U-Mary rounded out the 16-team poll. Senior setter Alexa Reed was selected as the USF “NSIC Player to Watch.” Reed, who played her first two collegiate campaigns at St. Leo’s (Fla.), amassed 1,036 assists in 2012. The League City, Texas native’s 9.59 per set average was eighth in the NSIC and ranked sixth on USF’s all-time single season charts. Reed’s junior season was highlighted by a career-high 56 assist, 10 dig performance against Upper Iowa (10/6). She added a career-best seven kills in a four-set win over Mary (10/20).  The Cougars begin their 2013 campaign on Friday, Sept. 6 at Nova Southeastern University (Fla.) in the Shark Classic.
