SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KWSN) – The University of Sioux Falls women’s soccer team was voted to finish 16th in the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Soccer Preseason Coaches’ poll, announced Tuesday by the conference office. The Cougars finished their inaugural season in the NSIC with a 0-15-1 record in conference play (0-17-1 overall).

Winona State was tabbed to win the NSIC with 215 points coming off of a second place conference finish in the 2012 season. The Warriors received 10 first place votes and were followed closely by defending conference champion Minnesota State who tallied 213 points with 5 first place votes. Minot State rounded out the top three in the conference, earning 190 points and 1 first place vote.

Senior Melissa Daugherty was named as one of USF’s “NSIC Players to Watch.” Daugherty started 15 games for the Cougars as a Defender during her junior campaign, putting up five shots and logging over 1200 minutes.

Newcomer Ciara Howerton was also named as a USF “NSIC Player to Watch.” Howerton comes to USF from Maple Woods Community College where she scored 17 goals and had 15 assists during her two years of competition. During her freshman and sophomore seasons for the Monarchs, Howerton was named the Regional Player of the Year, and also earned First Team All-Region honors.

The Cougars will begin the 2013 season on the road against non-conference opponents Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State. USF will compete in their home opener on September 11th when they host conference foe Southwest Minnesota State.

The Cougars will return ten players from the 2012 roster, and will rely heavily on nine newcomers to the Cougars roster.
