In 2011, Maroon 5 revived their career. In 2012, they established their superstardom, thanks to their album Overexposed and massive hits like "One More Night." But in 2013, lead singer Adam Levine became a brand unto himself, branching out into numerous non-musical business ventures and managing both to get engaged and be named Sexiest Man Alive.
Helping to drive Adam's move beyond serving as the frontman for Maroon 5 was, of course, his continued participation in NBC's smash hit The Voice. He and Blake Shelton are the only judges who have yet to sit out a season of the show, so in 2013, we got to see them judging alongside Shakira and Usher , and then again alongside old pals Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera . Appearing numerous times per week on TV for weeks at a time certainly helped cement him in the public consciousness, and that's when the products started to roll out.
Adam, who'd once declared that celebrity perfumes should be banned and be "punishable by death," did a complete 180 in February and launched his own signature fragrances for both men and women, which he described as "very basic and very classic, the anti-celebrity fragrance.”
Then, in October, he brought out his own line of menswear -- both clothing and accessories -- at Kmart stores and online. "I want to make sure that every stitch is something that I approve of," he said. 2013 also saw the first releases from Adam's own record label, 222: Where It All Began , an album by Glee star Matthew Morrison , and an EP titled With the Whole World Watching , from former Team Adam member Tony Lucca .
Adam also walked the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival in September for the premiere of his first movie, Can a Song Save Your Life? , in which he starred opposite Oscar nominees Keira Knightley , Mark Ruffalo , Catherine Keener and Hailee Steinfeld . The festival even named its official cocktail after the singer: Skyy Vodka Adam's Apple. That month, the Weinstein Company acquired the rights to distribute the film.
On the TV side, Adam hosted Saturday Night Live in January, and managed to pull off a few funny moments, especially by singing in a Lonely Island digital short called "YOLO." Then, in June, Adam and his manager and producing partner Jordan Feldstein signed what's called a "exclusive one-year first-look development deal" with NBC. That means that he and Feldstein -- a childhood friend and the brother of actor Jonah Hill -- will have a hand in creating both scripted and reality programs for the network.
Adam's personal life also went pretty well in 2013: he got engaged to 24-year-old Victoria’s Secret model Behati Prinsloo in July. He also was front row in November for the taping of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show special, cheering on his scantily-clad bride-to-be as she strutted down the runway. Also in November, People magazine named Adam its Sexiest Man Alive 2013. He was the first musician, and the first Jewish man, ever to receive the honor, which the magazine has been giving out since the mid-80s.
Adam's music career certainly didn't suffer as a result of his extra-curricular activities. Overexposed continued to spin off hits -- "Daylight" and "Love Somebody" both went top ten, and the band co-headlined the Honda Civic Tour with Kelly Clarkson, resulting in the best-selling installment of the tour's 12-year history. Counting the Honda Civic Tour and the band's headlining tour earlier this year, Maroon 5 played to more than a million fans in 2013.
Maroon 5 also won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Band, the Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer Music Star: Group, and the American Music Award for Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist. In addition, Adam appeared without Maroon 5 on the Grammy Awards, duetting with his old pal Alicia Keys on a mashup of "Daylight" and "Girl on Fire."
Adam's ultimate accomplishment of 2013, though, may have been winning the fifth season of The Voice with his contestant Tessanne Chin , thereby breaking his buddy Blake Shelton 's three-in-a-row winning streak.
