When Mariah Carey appeared as a social worker in the Oscar-nominated movie Precious , she looked frumpy on purpose. Now, in the latest movie from that same director, Lee Daniels , she's again dressing way, way down.
In a publicity shot from the new movie, The Butler , Mariah is shown without makeup, standing in the middle of a cotton field with her hair wrapped in a rag. She appears to be picking cotton, so her character, Hattie Pearl, might be a slave. The movie itself is a historical drama that's based on the true story of Eugene Allen , the African-American man who served as a butler in the White House from 1952 to 1986: that's eight presidencies.
This is the third Lee Daniels movie that Mariah has appeared in: in addition to Precious, she also starred in the film Tennessee , in which she played an aspiring singer.
Mariah's co-stars in The Butler include Lenny Kravitz, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Robin Williams, Vanessa Redgrave, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and many, many more. It hits theaters August 16.
