Sioux Falls finishes first citywide mosquito control spray

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) -  Sioux Falls Health officials say the mosquito population exploded last week with the sunshine.

Health Program Coordinator Denise Patton says the first round of citywide mosquito control spraying was completed yesterday.

Patton says there has not been any report of a West Nile Virus infection yet in South Dakota.  She says mosquito traps have caught the type of mosquito that best transmits the virus.  But, she says there are also a lot of flood mosquitos that bite quite a bit but aren't good at carrying virus.

Patton says spray control typically reduces the mosquito population by 30 to 60 percent.

She says spot spraying may start next Monday.
