Melissa Etheridge announced Wednesday that in the wake of the Supreme Court decision on Proposition 8, she'll wed her long-time girlfriend, Nurse Jackie creator Linda Wallem .
"Lets hear it for the general progress of the human mind. With a beautiful sweep of sweet justice's blind hand we move forward," Melissa wrote on Twitter. "We correct the laws made hastily out of fear. I look forward to exercising my American civil liberties...and getting fully, completely and legally married this year to my true love of over three years, Linda Wallem."
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court let stand an earlier ruling that California's Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriage, was unconstitutional. That paves the way for legal same-sex marriage to resume in that state.
Melissa previously had had a commitment ceremony with her ex-partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels , the mother of two of her children. In 2008, when same-sex marriage briefly became legal in California, she announced that she and Michaels would get married. However, that never happened, and in 2010, they split up. That same year, Melissa started dating Wallem.
