Cyndi Lauper and "American Pie" singer Don McLean are not exactly known for their prowess in the field of country music, but this fall, they'll be joining some of the genre's biggest names at a farewell concert for country legend George Jones .
The 81-year-old Jones, considered one of the greatest country singers in history, will be staging his final concert in Nashville on November 22, and both Cyndi and Don have been invited to participate, along with dozens of country stars, including Garth Brooks , Randy Travis , Kenny Rogers , Tanya Tucker , Crystal Gayle and Billy Ray Cyrus .
Explaining why Cyndi was invited, Jones said, "People may not know this, but I have been a fan of Cyndi’s since I first saw her years ago at the Grammy awards. What a thrill it was to hear she will be part of this final celebration." As for Don McLean, Jones says he and the singer "first met in the ‘70s, here in Nashville, and I love his singing, his songwriting, and I know his performance will be just as special as when I first saw him sing."
Kid Rock is also on the bill for the event, taking place at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, and more stars will be announced in the coming weeks.
