SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - Sioux Falls Police say the dog that bit an officer Tuesday afternoon at 11th Street and Summit Avenue was licensed and was up to date on its shots.
Officer Sam Clemens says the policeman saw an 18-year-old woman struggling to handle the leashed pit bull as it was chasing an 8-year-old boy.
Clemens says the officer was trying to get the dog into his squad car when it bit him in the hand. He says the officer drew his gun and shot the dog about one to six inches away. The bullet hit the animal between the head and neck and it stayed inside the dog.
Clemens says the dog managed to run a block before responding authorities found it. the dog was euthanized because of the wound.
The 18-year-old was walking a relative's dog and no charges will be filed. The officer suffered some puncture wounds and scrapes.
