SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - The Parents Matter Underage Drinking campaign started in Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties seven years ago and has grown into a statewide campaign.
Campaign Coordinator Darcy Jensen says 61 South Dakota teens have died and 730 have been injured in alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents since that time.
Jensen says over 160 South Dakota schools and communities will participate in the Parents Matter Campaign with this year's theme of "Take A Stand, Have the Talk." She says past efforts are working because there were no alcohol related fatalies among teenagers last year in Minnehaha or Lincoln Counties.
Jensen says the campaign this year reaches out to parents and encourages them to talk to their kids about drinking and driving. She says it's more important than ever before that parents communicate with their teens about the dangers of underage drinking and driving.
The Coalition for a Drug-Free South Dakota, Prairie View Prevention Services and O'Gorman High School are sponsoring a town hall meeting on underage drinking and driving Tuesday, April 2,7 p.m. at O'Gorman.
