SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - For 6-year old Madison Grimm, the Federal Duck Stamp Contest rollercoaster ride is finally over. On April 19, Madison learned that she had won the Annual Duck Stamp Contest. On April 26, all of her joy was wiped out when she was told she was disqualified because of the Graphite Transfer Technique she used to create her stamp. Finally, yesterday, May 2, she learned that the decision was overturned and she was once again the winner.

“I really feel bad about the whole situation,” said Adam Grimm, Wild Life Artist and Madison’s Father. “When we were told the decision was overturned, we felt relieved and excited that we can now have the enjoyment of this experience that Madison worked so hard to earn.”

“Madison said she's honored and excited to be the 2013 Federal Junior Duck Stamp winner,” said Grimm. We are grateful to the USFWS for their reconsideration. And we are also thankful to God and to all of the many people who believed in Madison and helped us through this process. I wish I could say it was all positive emotions, but we feel very sad for the other families that have been affected by this.”

“I felt my daughter was sentenced without the opportunity to respond,” said Grimm. “Not everyone is aware that the top artists use the Graphite Transfer Technique, and those who weren’t voiced their protests. I’m glad that I was able to tell our story in the media and the decision was overturned.”

“I was told by the Federal Duck Stamp Program that mistakes were made and they would be corrected before the next contest, said Grimm. “Madison got her 5,000 dollar scholarship that she worked so hard to earn back and I got my reward when she hugged me and said thank you daddy.”

“Madison won't be able to enter next year due to the National winner having to sit out for the following year,” said Grimm. “That said, as long as the program continues, our children will continue to enter if they desire.”

Adam Grimm was a featured guest on the Greg Belfrage Show on KELO on May 2, 2013.
