BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (KWSN) —Charlon Kloof scored a game-high 16 points and led four St. Bonaventure players who scored in double figures as the Bonnies beat South Dakota 68-46 at Reilly Center Saturday in the season opener for both teams.

Joey James made his debut as head coach of the Coyotes, but saw his team make 15 of 45 shots from the field (.333), be out-rebounded 43-28 and commit 17 turnovers. Brandon Bos and Trevor Gruis scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the team.

St. Bonaventure improved to 45-2 in home openers since 1967. The Bonnies got 12 points each from Marquise Simmons and Dion Wright and 11 from Jordan Gathers. SBU made 24 of 57 shots (.421) and were 16 of 23 from the free-throw line (.696).

Three early three-pointers by Bos helped the Coyotes take a 17-9 lead eight minutes into the game. South Dakota made 2 of 15 shots and committed six turnovers the rest of the first half and trailed 31-21 at the break. Bos was 3 of 4 from long distance. His teammates combined to make 1 of 14.

Gruis and Bos combined to score nine points in the first four minutes of the second half to bring USD within five, 35-30. The Bonnies outscored USD 22-9 in the 10 minutes that followed to put the game out of reach. Kloof scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half.

In addition to Gruis and Bos, James started Trey Norris, Adam Thoseby and Karim Rowson, who combined for 15 points. Norris and Thoseby played in their first games as Coyotes after sitting out last season. The Coyotes only bench points came from Tyler Flack who hit a jumper and made two free throws.

South Dakota, which plays its first four on the road, takes on Canisius at 6 p.m. CT Monday.
