Economic growth is something we can all be thankful for

SIOUX FALLS DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION - Thanksgiving is traditionally time to be grateful for the harvest, going back to those first Pilgrim autumn celebrations. Living in a state that values its agriculture industry, we are all thankful when the harvest is a bountiful one. All of us have so many things to be thankful for, including having our families safe around us, good health, a roof over our heads, good things to eat and so much more. Being thankful for living in a community that’s showing steady growth may not be at the top of our list, but it’s something that affects us all.

Here in the Sioux Falls area, we can look around and see evidence of our continued prosperity. Our population keeps growing, our sales tax collections tell us our merchants are still selling goods and construction activity this year has set a new record, soaring well above a half billion dollars in new building permits—a vital sign of growth now and in the future. Our regional economy is still growing faster than the rest of the nation—and corporate decision makers are taking note of our economic strength and positive business climate.

A large number of factors have helped keep our local economy strong. Sioux Falls continues to attract businesses and people looking for opportunity—and that has impacted our entire region. But public interest in economic development, the determination to keep things growing strong and the participation of civic leaders in efforts to plan for the future have all played a big part in the successes we’ve seen.

Not every company, not every family, not every individual feels that things are rosy. There’s always room for improvement—and we still have plans and strategies to maximize our advantages and keep our momentum moving forward. But as we look ahead to the holidays and a new year, let’s put our economic development successes on the list of things to be thankful for.

We still have goals to achieve and challenges to face, but we’re all working together for a better tomorrow right now, in the Sioux Falls area. That’s something to be thankful for today.
