Dux Head to Ford Field, Red Wings Lose, Blackhawks Win, Lions Play Today and so do the Bears


UNDATED (WHTC) – The Lions are home today in Ford Field to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Detroit is looking to bounce back from a 37-27 loss at Pittsburgh.  The Lions scored all 27 points in the second quarter, with Calvin Johnson catching his 10th and 11th touchdown passes of the season.  Game coverage begins at noon on 1450 WHTC.

            The Chicago Bears are in the Gateway City today to challenge the St. Louis Rams at the Edward Jones Dome.  Chicago pulled out a 23-20 overtime win against the Ravens in Week 11.  The Bears won't have linebacker Lance Briggs nor quarterback Jay Cutler this week.

            This evening, Sunday Night Football future Hall of Fame quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will face off against each other when the Denver Broncos visit the New England Patriots.  Game coverage gets started at 7: 30 P.M. on 1450 WHTC.



            Clarke MacArthur scored twice as the Ottawa Senators took a 4-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.  Pavel Datsyuk and Darren Helm scored for the Red Wings in the loss.  Jimmy Howard allowed all four goals on 29 shots for Detroit, which had also snapped an eight-game home losing streak, its longest in 27 years, with the win against Carolina.  The Red Wings are in Buffalo for an afternoon game against the Sabres today.  Tune in to 1450 WHTC for the game at 4:40 P.M. 

            Andrew Shaw and Marcus Kruger each scored within nine seconds of each other in the third period to lift the Blackhawks to a 2-1 win over the Canucks at Rogers Arena.  Corey Crawford made 36 saves for Chicago, which has won three out of four to improve to 16-4-and-4.  They’ll play the Oilers in Edmonton tomorrow night.

     The Grand Rapids Griffins continue their winning ways on the road, with a late goal by Patrick Eaves during the Grand Rapids Griffins only power play of the night giving the Griffins the edge in a 2-1 decision over the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at Allstate Arena.  The win keeps the Griffins on top of the Midwest Division with a 13-4-1-1 record, including 9-2-1-1 on the road.



     The Pistons fell to the Hawks, 96-89, at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Friday.  They’re in Brooklyn to take on the Nets this afternoon.

     The Chicago Bulls aren’t having much luck on the road, losing to the Trailblazers on Friday night, 98-95.  They also lost guard Derrick Rose for the foreseeable future.  The team announced he is out indefinitely after an MRI revealed a torn meniscus in his right knee.  The Bulls are in L.A. and will play the Clippers this afternoon.


                                                                        College Football

      The Michigan State Spartans and Ohio State Buckeyes will meet in the Big Ten Championship Game on December 7th at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.  Michigan State topped Northwestern Saturday to win the Legends Division.  Ohio State defeated Indiana on Saturday to clinch the Leaders Division.  The winner earns a trip to the Rose Bowl as the Big Ten's representative to play the winner of the Pac-12 title game.

            Michigan's defense did everything it could to steal a football game on Saturday gaining just 158 yards of total offense and wasting four turnovers, and a defensive score, Saturday in a 24-21 loss at Iowa.  The Wolverines are home next week to take on Ohio State.

            The Grand Valley State football team was on the winning end in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. The Lakers put the rout on, downing the Cardinals 40-7 in Lubbers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The victory sends GVSU to the second round of the playoffs, where the team will face Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday at a time to be determined in Pueblo, Colo.

            Titus Davis caught seven passes for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Central Michigan Chippewas shut down the Minutemen of UMass, 37-0, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.  The Chippewas are now winners of two straight games.

            Western Michigan had the weekend off.  They face the Huskies of Northern Illinois in their final game of the season on Tuesday evening.  The Broncos have only had one win this season, four weeks ago against Massachusetts.


                                                                        College Basketball

            The Hope College Flying Dutchmen have started the season on a losing streak, dropping their third game in a row to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  They will play in the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic this weekend at Calvin College.  Their opponent on Friday is Aquinas and on Saturday they take on Cornerstone.

            The Flying Dutch women have won their first five games and will travel to Olivet to take on the Comets on Tuesday night.

            Grand Valley State trailed by 13 points early in the second half on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 23) against visiting Kentucky Wesleyan, but the Lakers outscored KWC 31-15 the rest of the game to earn a hard-fought 61-58 victory.  Grand Valley State is off until next Saturday (Nov. 30), when the Lakers travel to southern Ohio to take on Cedarville in a non-conference game.

            The GVSU Lakers ladies are playing in the Pop Duncan Classic this weekend.  They topped Truman State, 81-68 on Friday then dropped to Missouri-St Louis yesterday, 71-57.  Their home opener is this coming Saturday against Lewis.

     Keith Appling had 27 points and Gary Harris added 21, as top-ranked Michigan State held off Oklahoma, 87-76, in  the championship game of the Coaches  vs. Cancer Classic at the Barclays Center. 

     The Wolverines have been in Puerto Rico this week, beating Long Beach State, 85-61 and Florida State in overtime, 82-80.  They play Charlotte this evening in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-off.


                                                HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

     The post season continues for the Zeeland West Dux are headed to the BIG GAME!  Cole Hession scored two touchdowns and recovered two fumbles to lead Zeeland West to a 42-7 win over the Stevensville Lakeshore Lancers yesterday in Vicksburg.  Grant Postma led the Dux defensively with seven tackles and had one interception.  The Dux head to Detroit next week to face the DeWitt Panthers for the state title next Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit at 7:30 p.m. Its Zeeland West’s third trip to the championship game since the school was created in 2005.  The Dux took home Division 4 titles in 2006 and 2011.
