Vikings notch fourth-straight win with sweep of Northern State

ABERDEEN, SD (KWSN)- A trio of Vikings combined for 31 error-free kills to lead Augustana in a sweep over Northern State on Friday night. The 25-21, 25-14, 25-22 win gives Augustana its fourth straight NSIC victory and moves them to a 12-2 overall record, 4-2 in NSIC competition. The Wolves fall to 10-3, 3-3 in the NSIC.

Holly Hafemeyer drilled a match-high 15 kills while Taylor Hrdlichka and Kelsey Kaufmann each chipped in with eight, but those three did it all without a single attack error. Augustana finished with a .297 attack percentage (49-8-138) and Marissa Johnson finished the night with 44 assists (14.67/set).

The Viking defense showed up equally great with eight blocks and 72 digs. Hafemeyer led the front line defense with two solo blocks and three block assists while Kayla Wallerich was one of four Vikings with double-digit digs, recording a match-high 17. The Wolves were held to a .164 attack percentage (38-16-134) fighting the strong Viking defense.

The Vikings were in a tight first set with NSU, but Courtney Ysker sparked a five-point surge to give them a cushion and Hafemeyer sealed the 25-21 win with a kill and solo block. Augustana only mustered a .200 attack percentage (12-5-35) in the first stanza, but four blocks held the Wolves to .086 (10-7-35) on the attack.

Augustana took a 2-0 lead in the match by using two big runs to put the Wolves away 25-15 in the second set. The Vikings drilled 21 kills and scooped up 32 digs for a dominating set win. Augustana hopped out to a 14-6 lead on an balanced offensive attack before withstanding a NSU surge, pulling the Wolves within two. Kaufmann and Hrdlichka combined for five straight kills capping off a 9-2 runn to put the Wolves away.

In the third set, the Vikings faced a 13-11 deficit before Brittany Cech led a five-point run and the Vikings held off Northern State for the 25-22 match-sealing win. Ysker drilled seven kills in the third set and the Vikings tallied 24 digs to keep the NSU attack at bay. Ysker finished the match with her eighth double-double of the year, combining 12 kills with 14 digs.

Augustana closes out their road trip with a 4 p.m. match at Minnesota State Moorhead on Saturday.
