Siouxland Libraries and Multi-Cultural Center Partner to Present Muslim Journeys Series

by

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO-AM) Siouxland Libraries is one of 840 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to receive the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). The program aims to familiarize public audiences in the United States with the people, places, history, faith, and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world. The books and DVDs included in the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf are now available for checkout from Siouxland Libraries, and cover themes such as literature, art, history, faith, and American perspectives.

As part of Muslim Journeys, the library, in partnership with the Sioux Falls Multi-Cultural Center, will offer three free public programs to further explore the themes presented in the materials. On Wednesday, October 23, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., kids and parents will have a chance to learn about Islam through an after-school program at the Multi-Cultural Center featuring storytelling and hands-on activities.

On Wednesday, October 30, the Multi-Cultural Center will host The Mosque Experience, a guided and interactive tour through the etiquette and practices of Islamic faith, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Main Library will present a showing of the documentary Islam: Empire of Faith on Wednesday, November 6, at 6:30 p.m., with a discussion led by Islamic community leaders following the film.

The Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities, conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association. Major support for the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf was provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. Additional support for the arts and media components was provided by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.
