After more than four decades in show business, you'd think that Elton John would have appeared on pretty much every awards show there is, but there's a first time for everything.  On Sunday night, he'll make his first-ever appearance on the Primetime Emmy Awards.

Elton's performance will pay tribute to the late, legendary Liberace , whose HBO biopic, Behind the Candelabra , received 15 Emmy nods this year.  The movie's stars, Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, will also be part of the segment.  And Elton, whose new album The Diving Board comes out on Tuesday, says he's grateful for the exposure.

Speaking to The Australian , he says, "When you get to my age you've got to take whatever you can get.  When you're 66, you're not on the radio, and the Emmys gives a massive audience for my album."

He plans to perform his new single "Home Again" as part of his appearance, but what viewers should really look forward to is his outfit.  After all, years before anyone had ever head of Elton, Liberace was rocking over-the-top outrageous sequin and crystal-studded onstage ensembles while thrilling millions with his piano playing.

"If you look at early videos in Elton John's career, I think that he was very much paying tribute to Liberace in a lot of his stylings...his pianos and big fur coats and stuff," Mickey O'Connor , editor of TVGuide.com, tells ABC News Radio. "So yeah, it makes total sense [for him to appear]."

O'Connor adds, jokingly, "I imagine it's gonna be a very shy, restrained performance!"
