Elton John will be presented with a special honor at the 2013 edition of his AIDS Foundation's annual "An Enduring Vision" benefit, which will take place October 15 in New York City.  The pop-rock legend will receive the Harvard AIDS Initiative Leadership Award for his long support of the fight against the disease.

Among the other luminaries who have received the honor are Diana, Princess of Wales ; tennis star Arthur Ashe ; actor Richard Gere ; and former United Nations Ambassador Richard Holbrooke .

"When I think of the extraordinary people who have received this honor before me, including my dear, dear friend Princess Diana, I admit to being quite humbled at the thought of being numbered among such august company," says John in a statement.  "I pledge to continue my work for as long as it takes to achieve an AIDS-free generation and ultimately a world without AIDS."

As previously reported, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton also will be a special honoree at the fundraiser.  She will be presented with the Elton John AIDS Foundation's first-ever Founder's Award in recognition of, among other things, a groundbreaking speech she gave in Geneva, Switzerland, declaring that "gay rights are human rights and human rights are gay rights."
