BBB warns of hackers getting into phone systems

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO AM) - There’s a new fraud involving the hacking of voice mail systems leaving the victim to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars in international calls.

Jessie Schmidt with the Better Business Bureau says hackers keep trying common default passwords until they break into the phone system.

Schmidt says protection is similar to computer safety, that is to be creative with you passwords and don't rely on consecutive numbers, the year or other easily determined passwords.  She also advises that you change passwords regularly.

Schmidt says an Omaha company found their phone line had been accessed through their conferencing feature.  They found a $300 charge that they have to pay.

According to the FCC, this scam is carries out by hackers who call into a voice mail system and search for mailboxes that still have the default passwords active or have passwords with easily guessed combinations
