Prior to the MTV Video Music Awards on August 24, MTV always sponsors a concert called Lifebeat -- Music Fights HIV/AIDS, which raises money to educate young people about HIV/AIDS prevention. This year's headliner has just been announced: Sam Smith.
Sam will take the stage August 22 at the event, which will be held at The Avalon in Los Angeles. Fans in Southern California who are subscribers to Time Warner Cable can get free tickets to the event. Also on the bill is Australian rapper Iggy Azalea.
Sam is nominated for two MTV VMAs: he's up for Best Male Video for his hit "Stay with Me," and he's one of the nominees in the Artist to Watch category. He hasn't been announced as a performer on the August 24 telecast...yet. He'll launch a U.S. headline tour in September.
"Stay with Me" continues to hold at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind MAGIC! 's smash "Rude," which tops the chart for a fifth week.
Over the years, artists who've headlined the pre-VMA Lifebeat concert include Maroon 5 , Robin Thicke and more.
