Chip Seal and Fog Seal Project on I-90

MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO AM) – The South Dakota Department of Transportation says chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to Interstate 90 in Aurora and Davison counties starting Thursday, Aug. 14.

Both the east and westbound lanes of Interstate 90, including inside and outside shoulders, will be chip and fog sealed between Exit 296 at White Lake to Exit 319 at Mt. Vernon, approximately 22 miles.

The ramps and crossroads at Exits 296 and 319 and the rest areas will also be sealed.

Traffic on I-90 will be reduced to one lane with a speed limit of 45 mph through the construction zone.

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers on the ramps and by flaggers and a pilot car on the crossroads. The rest areas will be closed on the days they are sealed.

Approximate time to complete the chip seal on this route is seven days and three to four days for the fog seal.

Loose gravel will be present for a period of 24 to 72 hours after each day’s chip seal application.

The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip and fog seal projects.

Bituminous Paving, Inc. from Ortonville, Minnesota, is the prime contractor on the $2.4 million contract.
