South Dakota retailers argue against minimum wage hike

Pierre, SD (KELO-AM) It's one size fits all says the South Dakota Retailers Association, arguing against the November ballot measure that would hike the state minimum wage.

Executive Director Shawn Lyons says many small businesses in South Dakota could not afford raising the minimum wage and those who can are already paying over the minimum to better attract workers.

Lyons says another problem is that future hikes would be pegged to the Consumer Price Index - unfair, he says, to tie mandatory wage hikes in South Dakota to what is going on in California or Florida.

The South Dakota Democratic Party, one of the prime movers behind the ballot measure, says that raising the minimum wage will help thousands of South Dakota workers and help the state's economy.
