BURNSVILLE, Minn. (KWSN) – The Augustana soccer team was picked seventh in the 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll in a release by the league on Tuesday.
No. 15 Minnesota State was chosen first by the coaches after receiving seven first-place votes out of the 16 total votes, one more than eighth-ranked Minnesota Duluth's six. The Mavericks' 214 points were also the most in the conference.
The Vikings' 139 points were 11 behind sixth-place Bemidji State.
Seniors Annie Thoresen and Emily Hanneman were selected as 'Players to Watch" in the league for Augustana in 2014.Thoresen finished second on the team last season with six goals, highlighted by a hat-trick performance in a 4-1 victory over Wayne State.
Hanneman started in 18 games in 2013 and earned NSIC Defender of the Week honors on Sept. 16. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native was part of a Viking defense that posted three shutouts last season.UMD's Maureen Stormont and MSU's Breanna Steele, both seniors, were named preseason offensive and defensive players of the year. Stromont on the offensive side of the ball, and Steele on defense.
Augustana held their first practice of the year on Monday, and open the season on the road against Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. at 7 p.m. on Sept. 5.
