Washington D.C., (KELO AM) - U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that producers will be able to sign up for up for livestock disaster assistance programs in 60 days.  The announcement follows a letter Senator Johnson sent with his colleagues urging Secretary Vilsack to expedite implementation.

“This speedy sign up for livestock disaster assistance is good news for producers across South Dakota and it is especially good news for those ranchers hit hard by the Atlas blizzard,” said Johnson.  “I am glad USDA is acting on my request to quickly implement these programs to get much needed help out the door to our producers.”

Today President Obama and USDA Secretary Vilsack announced that USDA plans to have the Livestock Disaster Programs reauthorized in the recently passed 2014 Agriculture Act of 2014 available for sign up in 60 days. Producers will be able to sign up for the livestock disaster programs for losses not only for 2014 but for losses they experienced in 2012 and 2013. While these livestock programs took over a year to get assistance out the door under the last Farm Bill– USDA has committed to cut that time by more than 80 percent and begin sign-up in April.
