BURNSVILLE, MINN. (KWSN) – One day after winning their opening round matchup of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, the Cougars had two individuals who were recognized by the conference for their outstanding performances during the 2013-14 season. The conference office announced on Wednesday the honoring of Sam Knecht as Freshman of the Year and Laura Johnson as a First-Team NSIC performer.

Knecht, the NSIC Freshman of the Year, had a successful first year with the Cougars program as she started each of the 19 games that she played in. During conference play, Knecht averaged 8.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game while also shooting 37.9% from the field. She was able to play her best when the stakes were the highest as she averaged 12.0 points and 12.5 rebounds in the Cougars two showdowns with crosstown rival Augustana. She also recorded five double-doubles in NSIC play this year. Knecht's biggest strength comes on the boards where her rebounding average (7.6 rpg) and offensive rebounding average (2.95 rpg) are the top among all freshman players. She also reached double-digit scoring marks ten times during conference play and hit double-digit rebounds in six games.

Laura Johnson earned her second NSIC First-Team honors as a forward this season. During her senior campaign, Johnson averaged 14.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.2 blocks per game. Johnson made her presence known on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court this season as she ranked third in the conference in three-point FG’s made per game (2.64) and sixth in three-point percentage (41.4%) while also averaging 7.2 rebounds (2nd in NSIC) and 2.2 blocks (2ndin NSIC) in conference play.

After defeating St. Cloud State 75-68 in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, the Cougars will now return to Sioux Falls where they will matchup with Wayne State at the Sanford Pentagon on Saturday, March 1 with tipoff slated for 6 p.m.
