PIERRE, S.D. (KELO AM) – South Dakota’s Driver Licensing Program is asking its customers to be cautious of Internet sites that charge for assistance with driver licensing services.
While citizens must pay a fee to obtain or renew a South Dakota driver license, the information about the program and staff assistance with questions or problems is provided without charge, said Cindy Gerber, director of the Driver Licensing Program.
“We recently had a contact from a citizen who was charged $26.99 by a website for online renewal,’’ Gerber said. “While the charge is for access to the site and their recommendations on what forms to use from our (South Dakota Driver Licensing Program) site, the person could have gotten that information from us without the charge.’’
The Driver Licensing Program charges a $20 fee for a new license or renewal of a license, but information and assistance is without charge, Gerber said.
“We aren’t saying other sites are doing anything wrong, but we do want our citizens to know they can obtain forms and assistance without paying,’’ she said.
