VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO-AM) -- According to rankings published by U.S. News & World Report, the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine is one of the nation’s top 5 leaders when it comes to rural medicine.

The magazine’s “Best Graduate Schools 2015” guide ranks USD’s medical school at No. 5, rising four spots from last year's No. 9 ranking. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Sanford School of Medicine has been recognized by U.S. News for rural medicine. Topping this year’s list for rural medicine was the University of Washington.

“The addition of our Frontier and Rural Medicine (FARM) program along with our emphasis on encouraging graduates to practice medicine in rural areas has greatly strengthened the Sanford School of Medicine’s mission at providing students with an education that’s focused on enhancing rural medicine,” stated Mary Nettleman, M.D., M.S., M.A.C.P., dean of the Sanford School of Medicine and vice president for health affairs at USD.

The Sanford School of Medicine’s mission places an emphasis on family medicine and encourages graduates to serve people in rural areas and other underserved places in the state.

Criteria for the rankings include med school deans and faculty, who were polled by the publication in selecting the top programs in the nation. The rankings are part of the U.S. News Media Group 2015 Best Graduate Schools rankings available online at www.usnews.com/gradmeth. Highlights of the rankings will be published in the “Best Graduate Schools 2015” edition, on sale Tuesday, April 8.
