PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The South Dakota State University baseball team racked up a season-high 18 hits in wrapping up play at the Snowbird Invitational Wednesday with an 11-9 victory over Baldwin Wallace (Ohio).

The Jackrabbits ended the first leg of their Spring Break trip with a 3-3 record in Florida, improving to 9-8 overall. Baldwin Wallace dropped to 4-4 on the season.

Baldwin Wallace scored twice in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs against Jackrabbit starter Derringer Huff, but SDSU responded with a three-run home half of the frame. Scott Splett and Zach Coppola opened the inning with consecutive bunt singles and Paul Jacobson followed with a double to right field. Jacobson later scored on a base hit by Aaron Machbitz, who was 4-for-5 in the game.

The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 3-all in the top of the second on an RBI single by Eric Murphy, but SDSU took the lead for good with a four-run third inning highlighted by an RBI single from Sam Pack and two-run double by Coppola.

The Jackrabbit lead grew to 9-3 in the fourth inning as Zach Holt singled in a run before an error allowed another run to score.

Starting in the fifth, Baldwin Wallace scored in four consecutive innings to cut into the Jackrabbit lead. Hunter Handel started the Yellow Jacket comeback attempt with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth.

SDSU closed out its scoring in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single by Jake Ratz, who went 3-for-5. Coppola also went 3-for-5, while Splett, Pack and Holt each tallied two hits.

Baldwin Wallace brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but Jackrabbit closer J.D. Moore induced an around-the-horn double-play grounder to end the game.

Freshman Ryan Froom was credited with his first collegiate victory after pitching three innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits, but did not walk or strike out a batter. Moore’s save was his second of the season.

Four different players notched two hits for Baldwin Wallace, which finished the game with 14 hits.

SDSU is scheduled to complete its Spring Break trip with a three-game weekend series at Creighton (Neb.). The series opener is slated for 6:30 p.m. Friday at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
