GAVINS POINT DAM, SD (KELO.com) — A Zebra Mussel infestation at Gavins Point Dam is taking a growing toll on equipment.
Officials say they can weigh intake gates down by 25-thousand pounds.
The gates weigh 88-thousand pounds, so adding 25-thousand pounds of zebra mussels can put a lot of stress on the mechanisms.
Cleaning them off the gates takes a lot of time, money and manpower.
