SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Two people were trapped when Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a house fire early this (Thursday) morning.
At about 12:53 this morning, a fire was reported at 5813 W. Bakker Park Drive.
Initial reports indicate there was fire in the living room and heavy black smoke coming from the windows.
Sioux Falls Police confirmed one person was trapped on the roof and another on the main floor of the home. Firefighters rescued both occupants and they were taken to the hospital.
Crews rapidly extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes and conducted a quick search safely bringing a dog out of the home. The animal was taken to a neighbor’s house for safekeeping.
Two police officers were taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured.
The fire was contained to the living room, however, there was heavy heat and smoke damage throughout the home.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: On Thursday, August 13th, 2020 at approximately 12:53 a.m., Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a reported structure fire with 2 people trapped at 5813 W Bakker Park Dr.
Initial reports indicated fire in the living room and heavy black smoke coming from the windows. SFPD confirmed one person trapped on the roof and one person trapped on the main floor of the home. The first truck on scene placed a ladder against the garage with 2 firefighters and assisted one person from the roof while SFPD boosted 2 firefighters through a bay window. The firefighters were able to rescue the man trapped inside the home. Both occupants were transported to the hospital by PCLS.
Next arriving crews rapidly extinguished the fire in a matter of minutes and conducted a quick search of the structure. Crews were able to safely bring one dog out of the home. The animal was taken to the neighbor’s house for safe keeping.
Crews remained on scene for an additional 2 hours to complete overhaul and ventilation operations, ensuring all hot spots had been extinguished and all the smoke was removed from the home. Two police officers were taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation. There were no firefighter injuries.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 5 fire trucks, 3 support vehicles, and 22 firefighters. The home did not have a sprinkler system or working smoke detectors. The fire is currently under investigation. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted on scene by Sioux Falls Police Department, XCEL Energy, MidAmerican, and PCLS Ambulance.
