SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires in the United States, followed by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
In 2018, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,630 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day (NFPA).
That number is expected to go up this year, with many spending the holidays at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Deep-fried turkey is one holiday cooking technique that, if done incorrectly, can be extremely dangerous and even life-threatening. During the holiday season, cooking safety might not always be at the top of mind. Still, it’s really the most important thing to ensure that you don’t turn your Thanksgiving dinner into a Thanksgiving disaster.
