It seems like, after a year plus of being cooped up with your quarantine crew, folks are BEYOND ready to head out on vacation.
But, if your idea of the perfect vacation is packing up the Family Truckster ® and hitting I-29, you might want to put a time limit on your travel.
Someone bothered to figure out that exactly 3 Hours and 46 Minutes is the max travel time you can handle with the family before they drive you absolutely nuts.
So…that got me thinking: What are some destinations you can get to, from Sioux Falls, before the (temporary) insanity kicks in? Here’s what I found:
1. Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
The Twin Cities are exactly 3hr 46 minutes away, assuming there’s no traffic (and assuming Dad doesn’t put the foot to the floor to beat his personal best time getting there.) For sports fans, the Twins are in season this summer, as are the Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA, and former Sioux Falls Canaries rival, turned MILB-affiliated St. Paul Saints. Factor in the Mall of America, breadth of Natural Attractions, and numerous museums, and the Twin Cities looks like a pretty solid contender! (assuming, of course, that pesky ongoing lockdown/mask mandate makes itself obsolete sooner than later.)
2. Lake Herman & Lake Madison
You could almost consider a trip to either Lake a stay-cation. They’re close enough to home that your drive time is less than an hour, but far enough away to feel like an escape. There’s no shortage of water sports and other outdoors for a great weekend away…or even longer (maybe take a body suit if you’re going to go soon. The water can stay chilly for awhile!)
Plus, prices for Airbnbs on/around the Lakes are super affordable…especially for families that need a little extra space.
3. Mitchell
I know what you’re saying…I’VE SEEN THE CORN PALACE 376 TIMES. I get it. But, there’s more to Mitchell. Check out the Dakota Discovery Museum and The Guns of History Gallery to start. Add in a visit to the INCREDIBLE Mitchell Cabela’s and a nice, juicy ribeye from Chef Louie’s for a more than perfect long weekend.
