SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Tuesday is Election Day in Sioux Falls. The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Voters will choose between three candidates on the mayoral ballot. They are incumbent mayor Paul TenHaken, immigration attorney Taneeza Islam, and community activist David Zokaites. KELO.com conducted 15-minute interviews with all three candidates.
There are also four city council seats up for grabs. Two are at-large seats and two represent districts.
Running for the At-Large A seat are incumbent Janet Brekke, a retired city attorney, pediatrician Sarah Cole and business owner Bobbi Andera.
Non-profit consultant Pam Cole and non-profit administrator Rick Merkouris are running for the At-Large B seat, where current councilor Christine Erickson is term-limited.
There will also be a new councilor in the Southeast District. Lawyer David Barranco and IT support tech Cody Ingle are running to replace the term-limited Rick Kiley.
Central District councilor Curt Soehl is running for re-election against pharmacist Jim Burzynski and Emmett Reistroffer, the COO of a medical marijuana business.
Voters will also have their say on a pair of potential amendments to the city charter.
One of those amendments would boost the mayor’s salary from the current $137,800 to $165,000. City council salaries, which are tied to the mayor’s, would also go up.
The other would allow the city council to remove the city attorney by a vote of six of the eight city councilors, among other provisions.
