DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (KELO.com) — It’s been ten days since Blue, the emu, went on the lam after being scared by 4th of July fireworks. She escaped from Willow Meadows Farm, a family-run petting zoo near Dell Rapids. Owner Kim Hubers tells Kelo.com news the goal is to use a feed bucket to entice her into an enclosure where they can trap her, lift the pen into a trailer, and bring her home.
She says Blue is not interested in the crops produced in the area, so she’s not being destructive. She is unsure of what she’s done, and she’s fast. That makes it difficult to contain her. Food and water is left out for Blue. She is monitored with a game camera, along with reports they are receiving from people who spot her. Hubers adds, they are also trying to get good sound of the drumming emu’s make when they play, as well as sounds of baby emu’s. Blue is obsessed with the babies so Hubers hopes putting the recording in the enclosure will draw her in.
Hubers gets tearful when it comes to her gratitude to the public. She said of Blue’s adventure, this has “been a community effort and we are so blessed and thankful that there are so many people jumping in and helping us”. She wants people to know how grateful they are to everyone.
Blue appears in good health on her excursion, they just want to get her back home.
