The 2000s had their fare share of trends, including skin care trends that probably shouldn’t have been a trend. Sure, they were all the rage, but beauty professionals are now sharing the 10 bad beauty trends from that era that serve as a warning for today.
- Apricot scrub. Most teens had the St. Ives apricot scrub.. which now has a bad-boy reputation as they’re harsh products that can trigger inflammation and irritation.
- Applying toothpaste on acne. We thought we were drying out the pimples making them go away, but we really were irritating them.
- Overplucked eyebrows. Eyebrows actually thin over time so by overplucking, you’re damaging hair follicles.
- Overly fruity-smelling shampoos and body wash. They smell nice, but the fragrances can cause irritation, redness and itchiness.
- Flat-ironing or crimping hair. All of that constant heat did damage to both the hair and the scalp.
- Astringents and other harsh topical treatments. These tended to be irritating, overdrying, and actually exacerbated breakouts.
- Acrylics and press-on nails. Moisture can get trapped underneath when you wear these regularly, which can cause fungal infection.
- Lightening hair (or blemishes) with lemon. Not only does it strip hair of its natural oils, but it can drip onto your face and scalp which contributes to sunburns.
- Body and face glitter. They contain filler ingredients, which are skin irritants.
- Tanning beds. They produce higher levels of UV rays than even the sun!
