SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO.com) — The Great Plains Zoo has announced plans to do away with the Delbridge Museum of Natural History, but City Councilor Greg Neitzert says, “Not so fast!
Zoo officials say the display is a safety hazard because the specimens contain arsenic. Neitzert says that flies in the face of science and modern practice.
In fact, Neitzert says natural history museum experts across the country are expressing shock with the action of pulling the curtain down on a display of this magnitude.
The display was closed the same day as the closing announcement was made – something Neitzert says came as a shock. Closing the Delbridge Museum is part of future development plans for the zoo, which include partnering with a butterfly display and large aquarium. Councilor Neitzert says it’s all moving too fast.
The city council is supposed to vote on whether to declare the museum artifacts as surplus next month.
