On 4/9 I saw the Minecraft Movie. And honestly, I’m not sure what to say about it. It stars Jack Black as Steve (“I… am Steve!”), Jason Mamoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. A group of people stumble into the world of Minecraft where anything you can think of, you can create! I’ve been playing Minecraft for over 10 years now, and I absolutely love this game. But making a story out of a game based in creativity and discovery was hard for the movie studios. The plot they conceived was the thinnest string of a plot they could’ve come up with, and the execution wasn’t great either. As a fan of movies, a Minecraft Movie is BAD. But it’s not as bad as you think it’s going to be. The movie has it’s own unique charm to it, and makes things overly simple. Instead of “show, don’t tell,” they show, tell, and execute throughout the whole movie. It can get really irritating at points. But the chemistry Jason Mamoa and Jack Black’s characters have on screen are amazing, the computer animations are fun, and the updated looks to creatures we know from the video games is cool to see. For as “bad” of a movie as it is, I still ended up having a blast while watching the film! I though it was cheesy, but fun! It’s something you can bring the kids to, just know it’s not great. If you’re going because of all the memes you see online, it’s totally worth it for that aspect alone. “CHICKEN JOCKEY!”
I feel extremely conflicted on how to review this movie, so I’m ranking it right in the middle: 2 ½ stars out of 5
