Last night my wife Dakota and I wanted to watch something we didn’t have to think about, so we put on Shrek Forever After (2010), the fourth installment of the Shrek series. Honestly, this movie gets a bad rep. It’s actually really solid. Shrek the Third gets a lot of hate, and that movie is just fine. But Shrek 4 is actually super solid. It’s not as great as the first two, but it’s good. A solid stand alone sequel. Shrek feels overwhelmed with his new life as a father, and wants to be back in his old ways of being a terrifying ogre, so he signs a deal, and it all goes away, so he has to win the love of his life back to break the curse. Pretty simple narrative, but it works well. I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I was going to, and I’d totally recommend it because it’s better than Shrek 3.
I give this movie 3 out of 5 stars – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
