SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — Feeding South Dakota is hosting the first annual “Bring Your Child to Serve Day” on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday.
Children 11 and up and their caregivers can come to the Sioux Falls, Rapid City, or Pierre distribution centers to pack food that will be distributed across the state.
Most schools will not be in session that day in honor of Dr. King.
Because of that , Feeding South Dakota says they felt it was a opportunity for families to volunteer together.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1/11/2022) – Each year, volunteers across the country come together on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to serve their neighbors and communities in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. As part of this national movement, Feeding South Dakota is hosting their first annual “Bring Your Child to Serve Day”.
The event, hosted at the organization’s Sioux Falls, Pierre and Rapid City Distribution Centers, is an opportunity for children ages 11 and up and their caregivers to sort and pack food that will be distributed in communities across the state.
“With most schools on break in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr Holiday, we felt it was an excellent opportunity for families to volunteer together,” shared Lori Dykstra, CEO of Feeding South Dakota.
When involving children in service projects caregivers demonstrate the importance of supporting the larger community bringing to life Dr King’s vision of neighbors working together to build a better future.
There are still volunteer shifts available at either 9am or 1pm at the Pierre, SD and Rapid City, SD Distribution Centers.
