SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) — The Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill is now accepting waste tires from residential customers for free.
It’s part of an effort to reduce the mosquito population in the Sioux Falls metro by reducing ponds of standing water which the insects use to breed.
The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources obtained a grant authorizing it to issue subgrants for eligible projects for the collection and disposal of waste tires in select locations in South Dakota, which the city will use to temporarily waive fees.
Residents in Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, and Turner counties can bring their unused tires to the landfill for free through October 31, 2022.
Tires from commercial businesses will have a fee applied and all loads, whether it’s trash or tires, must be tarped.
