CANTON, SD (KELO.com) — Lincoln County is making final preparations to move into its new Justice Center. The move apparently won’t include a new metal detector that was requested by the Sheriff’s office. Sheriff Steve Swenson made the request, saying the current detector still works, but is nearing the end of its life cycle. The overall project is below budget, so Commissioner Jim Schmidt says now is the best time to make the purchase, rather that having the current machine moved to the new center. “I can buy a set of used tires that maybe are ok, but would I want to put them on a new car?”
Commissioner Joel Arends says the current metal detector is still working, so the purchase isn’t necessary. “It’s only now that I’m hearing people that the metal detector at the front door isn’t going to work. Nobody was worried about that metal detector not working last week.”
Commissioners Schmidt and Tiffani Landeen reluctantly agreed to leave the metal detector out of the equipment package, which was approved in a 4-0 vote.
