Over the weekend I watched the Naked Gun (2025). I’ve been a fan of the original Naked Gun trilogy since I was in high school. They’re absolutely brilliant comedy movies that are absolutely untouchable. If you’re reading this and you haven’t seen the movie, but you’re somewhat interested in it, do it! Go see it. It’s absolutely hilarious. And it honors the original trilogy extremely well. From here on out: Spoiler warning for the rest of the read.
When I went to see this movie, I was talking with my wife, Dakota about what I wanted from a new Naked Gun movie. I told her, I want the police sirens and a “Weird Al” Yankovic cameo. If those two things are in the movie, they can do whatever else they want to, and I’ll be satisfied with it. I already gave my spoiler warning, but both of those things did happen! It was fantastic!
The Naked Gun truly honors the comedy that was instilled from the original show Police Squad, and honed in on how great the original Naked Gun movie used their props, special effects, and quit wit. From the opening scene making you think this is going to be a high-stakes action cop movie, to immediately subverting your expectations, this movie hits all the comedic tropes! It was directed by Akiva Schaffer who is one third of the Lonely Island. With that on the marketing you already know this movie is going to be hilarious. Akiva Schaffer collaborated with Dan Gregor who previously helped write the Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers (which was great), and it was produced by Seth MacFarlane who’s best known for Family Guy and American Dad.
Liam Neeson plays straight-faced Frank Drebin Jr. while going around being a detective. Running into Pam Anderson’s character Beth Davenport they find that things aren’t always as they seem. Especially in the world of the Naked Gun. Things are taken literally, puns are used constantly, and everybody has a fast sharp wit about them. Both Neeson and Anderson playing serious characters in such comedic roles really makes this movie different among other comedies we know today. It reminds me of the movie WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story where Daniel Radcliff plays “Weird Al” in the most serious way, but it makes the movie that much funnier. And speaking of “Weird Al,” his cameo in the movie was fantastic. I loved it so much. The story of the movie flows extremely well, the characters are all likeable, the cinematography was great, and the whole theater was laughing the entire movie.
If you already saw the movie but left before the end credit finished, go back and re-watch this movie! The end credits are FULL of weird little jokes, like listing the various type of dressings in a room, sharing a Netflix password, or even doing an eye test. Plus, the after credits sequence was hilarious and made every penny worth spending on a movie ticket. If you have the opportunity to go see The Naked Gun, absolutely do so! I can’t believe I can say I’ve seen a Naked Gun movie in theaters, but I’m happy I can say I have. And it was great.
I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars – keep making comedy movies like this! – You can see what I’m currently watching by following me on Letterboxd @ roberthawk
