Pierre, South Dakota (KELO.com) — South Dakota has an opioid crisis, and lawmakers want to take quick action. Department of Social Services Secretary Matt Althoff told the legislature’s appropriations committee this morning he wants to take a more measured approach to spending millions of dollars in opioid settlement money. Attorney General Marty Jackley says he respects the DSS approach, but he wants action taken sooner rather than later. Committee members are hopeful of being able to put some of the settlement money to work in the early part of next year.
