PIERRE, SD (KELO.com) — Discretionary parole is on the decline in South Dakota. The Board of pardons and Paroles says it has been reduced by 17-percent in the last two years. It’s dropping at an even sharper rate now, following the shooting of a Sioux Falls Police Officer in April by an inmate on parole supervision. 40 percent of the inmates with parole hearings this year have been granted release, compared to 57-percent in 2024.
