SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) –The driver who caused a deadly crash in 2024 is asking for a lighter sentence.
Damion Laurelez took a plea deal in a case involving the death of two teenage passengers after he was found with alcohol and drugs in his system following the crash.
The plea recommended no more than 30 years, but the judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison after Laurelez was allegedly heard on a phone call saying he couldn’t show remorse in the courtroom without laughing.
Laurelez wrote a letter to the judge saying it was a misunderstanding and a mechanism he was taught by his father to prevent him from crying.
Laurelez is expected to appear in court today.
